A top 5 song inquiry to end the week!

INQUIRY- a seeking or request for truth, information, or knowledge; study, scrutiny, exploration. [Inquiry week starts here. Click for this week's Bliss Initiatives.]

I have noticed several blogs doing different little memes where they list their top 10 favorite songs, CDs or even retro albums. I am always amazed by these lists. Most of the participants start off by saying something like "I don't know how I can narrow the list down to 10."  Arlee over at Tossing it Out is doing a blog hop where the folks pick 15 albums they couldn't live without, assuming their desert island provides the technology to play them.  I am amazed by this.

Here it is folks, I think I would be hard pressed to name 10 individual songs let alone albums, cds or artists. I don't know how it happened but I have somehow grown up without music playing even a supporting role. My mom liked quiet and we NEVER had a radio on in my house so I guess I missed out on a formative introduction. I remember once my Dad bought a collection of classical records "The Masters" or something like that and for about a month we listened intermittently to Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Mozart and others but soon that was once again replaced by silence.

As I write this I realize I may be danger of passing on the same malady to my daughter. Except for the "Music Together" (A program I take Jessie to on a semi-weekly basis) CDs which we play on an endless loop in the car, I almost NEVER have music on in our home. I don't own any CDs and at the moment don't even have an iTunes account!

I think this needs to change! And as a way to end my Inquiry week, I ask you dear readers if you wouldn't mind sharing five songs you think I should absolutely listen to and perhaps even share with my girl. It is time for me to begin my musical education and I think little J will have fun going along for the ride. Just maybe,with your help, the next time I see a favorite song meme I might actually have one or two of my own!

In other inquiry week news, I would like to say, as usual I didn't complete all of my initiatives but I did thoroughly enjoy some of  inquiries so all in all that nets me a 6 out of 10 for the weekly score and I'll give myself 4 bliss boosts. Lately I have been really able to see how focusing on my different virtues has really been netting me more Bliss. It is really fun to see that playing my Everyday Game can really make a difference in my life!

Daily question: What Five songs do you think I should get to know?

Next post: Community week gets underway!

My 13 bliss virtues are joy, order, creativity, passion, whimsy, serenity, inquiry, community, romance, gratitude, moxie, humility, and surprise.

This week we are studying Inquiry. Next up is Community Week.

  2. Oh, Kathy... no music? I cannot imagine... Around here, we're on music-overload. I like music but I also like quiet, whereas my husband likes music playing ALL THE TIME (ack.) I will send you an e-mail with some of the fav. albums around here (and a good list of kid-music, too, for your little J.)

  3. Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog, hope the songs there are helpful but possibly not age appropriate. If you're wondering on what music to play for a little person I can only offer my own experience growing up and with my baby. My parents had a record player and a rather enlightened approach to letting us play with it so we had hours of fun playing with music. Favourites from then included Abba, Simon and Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, the Star Wars sound track and the Theme from Rush. Mum used to sing nursery rhymes to us as well as parts of songs from her childhood. Now I play my little guy songs I like as well as sing lots of nursery rhymes and lullabies. He giggles like crazy at Maria's antics in the Sound of Music too, so I put that on for him occasionally. We've started a special music class - more rhymes and action songs.

  4. I think this may be the saddest post ever! You need to discover music! It is so real, so emotional, and such a wonderful way to feel! Here are a couple of my favorite songs:
    Delta Rain by The Blessing
    Total Eclipse of the Heart
    Say That You Love Me by Fleetwood Mac
    Little Toy Gun by Honey Honey (not around the little one)
    Actually - lately any of these artists: Honey Honey, Regina Spektor, Florence and the Machine

    I also really like a lot of Hip Hop, but we can work into that gradually. LOL!

  5. Music is one of my essential elements necessary for me to live and breathe. I cannot even begin to tell you how it really and truly has saved my life. When I am sad, I can be comforted by a favorite song. When I am angry, certain songs can sooth me. When I'm happy, music brings me even greater joy! I grew up with music, listening to my mom's records (Mamas and Papas, Peter Paul and Mary, Beatles) and then fell in love with it myself. Music has the power to heal--anything. I have SOOOOO many favorites, but let me try and list a few that you should easily be able to access on i-tunes or amazon:

    * Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan
    * Angel Mine by the Cowboy Junkies (my wedding
    song)
    * Starlight by Muse
    * Sleeps with Butterflies by Tori Amos
    * Come on Come out by A Fine Frenzy
    * You've got the love by Florence & the Machine
    * Come Back Home by Pete Yorn
    * Nothingman by Pearl Jam
    * Don't rain on my parade by the cast of GLEE
    * Heroes by David Bowie
    * Slipping Away by Moby
    * Gliding like a Whale by Peter Murphy
    * Wake Up by Arcade Fire

    They may not all be your cup of tea...but give them a try. You might even find something else you would be interested in. :) Theresa

  6. Thank you so much everyone! It is interesting how sad the lack of music in my life makes other people! One of my dearest friends has been telling me for more then a decade that I need to discover music... somehow I have never made it a priority. I like music, I even have a couple of songs I can remember "in the background" of some formative moments in my life so I do understand the power. So many other inquiries have felt more important when ever I have had some spare time but I do see that I have done so at a loss. I will listen to the songs you have so kindly offered and I promise to play music for my girl.

  7. Awww, music. I am so wishy washy with music. My husband has to play music all day long. He loves music. I on the other hand, depends on my mood. I love silence (when I can get it-which is rare) but I also love music. Like I said, depends on my mood. Enya is a favorite for me. John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band, Jack Johnson, Alannis, Blues Traveler, Collective Soul(my hubby's favorite), Coldplay, Journey, Maroon 5, The Fray, Journey...I can go on and on. Top 5 (hard) but here we go:
    Enya - Drifting (very relaxing)
    Dave Matthews Band #41 (very upbeat, fun, makes you want to dance)
    Collective Soul - The World I Know (I cry when I watch the video)
    John Mayer - 3x5 (he's very creative in his lyrics)
    Blues Traveler- The Mountains Win Again (I just like it)
    Also-my kids go to sleep with classical music. They can't sleep without it...wouldn't be good if we were stranded on an island...oops.

  8. Oh my gracious! I thought that music made the world go 'round! Honestly! The universal language, is it not?

    Just five is difficult.

    Into The Mystic-Van Morrison
    Two Step-Dave Matthews
    The One-Elton John
    Be OK- Ingrid Michealson
    Hand Me Down-Rob Thomas

    I could really go on and on....

    Hope you find the jive you are looking for!

  9. Gosh, Kathy, I was cleaning up my ever accumulating emails (they have been coming so fast) and I ran across yours that told me about this post. Don't know what happened that I didn't come here at that time. Thank you for mentioning my blog music post.

    As for your question, first of all I like silence sometimes and cannot imagine some silent time and yet I cannot imagine life without music. There is so much to recommend, but to give a child a good musical foundation I really think exposure to the classical works are so important and so neglected. Kudos to your dad when he got that set of the classics-- my mom had several sets like that and I really enjoyed listening to them when I was growing up, especially when paired with a education about the composers and the history of the music.

    Also some of the roots of American music like Stephen Foster and early jazz should be introduced. The kids are going to get enough of the modern pap that we here on radio and other media, so I think going for music from a historical perspective is great. Also some fine muscials like "King and I" or "Wizard of Oz" or even some of the old Busby Berkeley spectaculars might be of interest if your daughter hasn't been jaded by some of the current techie music TV stuff.

    Bottom line in my opinion, go eclectic. Expose your daughter to as many different kinds of music combined with some background about the music and she should grow up with an educated open-minded musical perspective.
